Prabowo interested in Jokowi for Jakarta governor

Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) chief patron Prabowo Subianto says he plans to support Surakarta Mayor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to run as the party’s candidate in the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial race.

“Pak Prabowo Subianto is very interested in supporting the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) member. It’s very likely,” Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani said on Wednesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Muzani said Prabowo was impressed with Jokowi’s successful track record in Surakarta.

Jakarta gubernatorial elections will be held on July 11.

A political party must have 15 seats in the Jakarta Council to be able to name its own gubernatorial candidate. Gerindra, which currently holds six out of 94 seats, will need other parties’ support to ensure its support of Jokowi.
